Clothing banks are spoiling marina view

A PLEA has been issued to Newry, Mourne and Down Council to relocate two charity clothing banks located at the Phennick Cove marina car park in Ardglass.

The banks currently occupy a spot overlooking the picturesque marina and nearby harbour with South Down MLA Colin McGrath calling for them to be moved.

He said the bins are having a negative impact on what he described as one of the area’s most scenic spots, urging council chiefs to move the bins which, he said, are damaging the visitor experience.

Mr McGrath said Ardglass is one of the jewels of the South Down coastline.

“The marina and harbour are loved by both locals and visitors alike, offering one of the most picturesque views in our district,” he said.

“It makes little sense that picnic benches intended for families and tourists to enjoy this vista are currently blocked by large clothing banks.”

Mr McGrath said he has asked the local authority to show some common sense and move the bins to another car park, just a few feet away, where they will continue to serve their purpose without spoiling this beautiful outlook.

“This is a small, practical step that would greatly improve the enjoyment of this space for everyone,” he suggested.

Mr McGrath said the move would “strike the right balance” between supporting local charities and protecting the environment of a much-loved public space.

He added: “Charity clothing banks provide an important service, but they must be sensitively located.

“By relocating these bins, we can ensure that Ardglass continues to be welcoming and attractive while also promoting recycling and charitable work. It’s a win-win and I hope to see action on this very soon.”
