LOCAL relatives of former darts world champion Andy Fordham, who died recently, have described him as a “gentle giant”.

The former BDO world champion passed away at the age of 59 following long term complications with his health.

He won the world title in 2004 and the World Masters in 1999, as well as finishing runner-up to Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor in the 2005 Masters of Darts tournament.

Fordham is remembered for his larger than life personality alongside his various televised performances, and was also unveiled as an ambassador for the British Disability Darts Association in 2016.

The Bristol born thrower left a lasting impression on this side of the water, having married local woman Jenny Vallely, who is from the Castlewellan area.

Maire Lynch, who is Jenny’s cousin, described the impact of the loss.

“The whole family are absolutely devastated. We couldn’t believe it when we were told,” she said.

“Andy was so lovely, exactly how he came across on the television. He

had such a big personality and was genuinely a very nice man.

“Whenever we were with Andy, either here or in London, there wasn’t a time he wasn’t stopped or recognised by his fans. He always made time for people and never ignored anyone who approached him,” she continued.

“Our family wish to express our sincere condolences to everyone affected from Andy’s death. He was a great man and it’s a great loss.”

Unfortunately due to Covid-19 restrictions, Andy’s local relatives will not be able to attend his London funeral on August 6.

However, they will still be able to virtually attend due to a live streaming of the service.
