Boardmills members enjoy music night as triathlon athletes visit Quoile WI meeting

7 May 2025

BOARDMILLS Women’s Institute enjoyed an evening of music recently.

The performance was led by talented local musicians Brian Johnston and Joyce Glenn, who are both members of Comber Music Society.

All proceeds from the evening were donated to the Northern Ireland branch of the Motor Neurone Disease Association, which is the chosen charity of Boardmills WI for this year.

Quoile WI

THE Quoile area of the Women’s Institute met for their Spring meeting recently.

The group’s chair, Linda Doran, welcomed all those in attendance at the Young Farmers’ Hall in Seaforde and introduced the speakers for the evening.

A memorable presentation was made by Rob Hill and Phil Martin, who hold the world record for the highest triathlon, which they completed on the Chilean mountain of Ojos del Salado in March 2020 to raise money for mymy (Mind Your Mate and Yourself) and LCCL (Life Change, Changes Lives).

After discussion of Institute reports, news from the Federation and sub-

committee reports, it was time for prizegiving.

The Pearl Shaw Trophy for the most points earned throughout the year was awarded to Spa WI and was collected by Fiona Patterson.

The Area quiz award was won by Seaforde WI and was collected by Susan McDowell and Cilla Green.

The Area Bowls Cup was won by Spa WI and was collected by Babs Bassett, who was the winning bowler.

The Petals and Pots award for a floral decoration was won by Geraldine Gray, from Downpatrick WI.

The Nora Lennon award for baking was won by Sandra Connelly, from Crossgar WI.

The Joan Shanks award for craft was won by Helen Newell, from Seaforde WI.

The Joan Shanks Perpetual Salver award for the most ribbons achieved in any institute in the Quoile area was won by Babs Bassett.

Congratulations were extended to all the winners.

The group are looking forward to having a tea room at the Balmoral Show next week, where visitors can buy items for sale, as well as buy a

ballot ticket for £1 to be in with a chance of winning a prize.
