PEOPLE across the district are being encouraged to take part in the forthcoming World Clean-up Day.
Newry, Mourne and Down Council chairman Mark Murnin said he will be doing his bit on Saturday to lift litter and is encouraging local people to take a walk along the local coastline or the area where they live and pick up any rubbish they see and dispose of it properly.
He said even if people only pick up once piece of litter, they will help make a difference and hopes there will be support for the worldwide initiative.
The council chairman said groups carrying out voluntary clean ups can approach the local authority for the loan of litter pickers, vests and bags. He said council staff will also arrange to remove the waste they have collected.
“Clean-ups can happen at any time of the year and litter pickers and assistance are always available,” said Cllr Murnin. “No effort is too small. Picking up one piece of litter in your garden, street or housing estate helps as it is one less item littering our district.”
Anyone wishing to borrow council litter pickers or any other equipment ahead of World Clean-up Day, is asked to contact the council on 0300 013 2233.
