LOCAL SDLP politicians have called for a clean-up of a historic laneway in Downpatrick.
South Down MLA Colin McGrath and Cllr Conor Galbraith are urging Newry, Mourne and Down District Council to carry out a scheme at Harry’s Loney, off the Strangford Road.
The laneway, which is maintained by the council, has become increasingly overgrown and litter-strewn, making it less accessible and welcoming for local residents.
The route has long been enjoyed as a quiet and picturesque path for walkers, families and cyclists, and is part of the growing network of active travel routes in the area.
Mr McGrath said: “Harry’s Loney is a real hidden gem. It offers people a peaceful, green space to walk, cycle or simply enjoy nature.
“But at present, the path is in poor shape, with overgrown vegetation and too much litter.
“We’ve asked the council to intervene and carry out a full clean-up to restore this lovely walkway.”
Cllr Galbraith remarked: “The community takes pride in spaces like this, and it’s important that the council plays its part in keeping them maintained.
“By keeping Harry’s Loney clean and accessible, we encourage more people to use it for everyday travel, exercise and wellbeing.”
The SDLP representatives are encouraging residents to make full use of the laneway and to report any issues so that the council can respond swiftly.
