APPROVAL for £460,000 to be spent on three new children’s playparks in Teconnaught, Darragh Cross and Newcastle has been agreed by Newry, Mourne and Down Council members.
The three play areas are to be completed within the current financial year.
A further £80,000 is to be spent on changing two play parks at Hillfoot Crescent in Ballynahinch into one larger play area.
The projects in the new five-year strategy were approved at the council’s Active and Healthy Communities committee on Monday night.
Play parks in Darragh Cross and Teconnaught will each receive £140,000, while £180,000 will be spent on improvements at the Down’s Road play park in Newcastle
Mournes Sinn Féin councillor Willie Clarke welcomed the upgrade of the popular Downs Road play park which, he said, will be warmly welcomed by residents and visitors.
“Given that the local authority agrees that the Downs Road playground should be a high spec flagship facility, it is vitally important that all-ability equipment will be provided to cater for children with special needs,” he said.
“The upgrade to the popular play park will be a welcome development, especially as families return to normality post Covid 19. The play park will be an attraction that will increase footfall for local businesses.”
