NEW signage has been installed at Dunleath Park in Downpatrick to inform park users that e-bikes and e-scooters are not allowed. The signage adds that this is ‘for the safety of all park users’.
Cllr Philip Campbell has said that the use of e-bikes and e-scooters in the popular local park is more than merely a nuisance.
It is, he added, a “public safety issue”. Welcoming the new signage, highlighting that e-bikes and e-scooters are not permitted in Dunleath Park, he said it is a “small step” in tackling “a much bigger problem that’s making people feel unsafe in their own community”.
The Sinn Féin councillor stated: “Parents have told me there’s been a noticeable rise in e-bikes and scooters being used across the skate park and pump track, when they’re simply not permitted there.
“This isn’t just a nuisance anymore, it’s a public safety issue.
“Getting this signage up is a step forward, but I know it won’t fix the problem on its own.
“This is part of a much wider campaign across County Down.
“Our MP Chris Hazzard has already raised it with the Justice Minister, demanding proper enforcement and resources to deal with it.
“People here deserve to feel safe in their own community, and I will keep pushing for our public spaces to be used properly and safely,” concluded the Downpatrick councillor.
