DOWNPATRICK Cricket Club marked an important milestone on Saturday past, with the official opening of its new cricket practice nets, score hut and spectator seating at The Meadow.
The special occasion was attended by Kiran Khatri, Consul General of India in Belfast, Councillor Glyn Hanna, Chairperson of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, and Councillor Alan Lewis, alongside players, members, supporters and representatives from the wider community.
The new facilities represent a significant investment in the future of cricket at Downpatrick CC, with the practice facilities secured through the Olympic Legacy Fund programme.
The club expressed its sincere thanks to Jonny Waite of the Northern Cricket Union for his support and assistance in helping secure the funding.
Addressing the gathering, Consul General Kiran Khatri praised the work being carried out by Downpatrick Cricket Club and offered her support, including any assistance the Indian Consulate could provide.
The visit was particularly significant as it was her first visit to County Down since taking up her official role in Belfast.
Chairperson Glyn Hanna also spoke at the ceremony, highlighting his own connection with cricket and expressing the Council’s support for the club as it continues to develop its facilities and contribution to the local community.
One of the most poignant moments of the day was the naming of the new score hut as ‘Keiko’s Scorehut’, recognising Keiko’s decades of service, dedication and contribution to the club.
The tribute was a fitting recognition of the important role Keiko has played in the history and life of the club, while the new facilities provide an exciting platform for the next generation of Downpatrick cricketers.
