DOWN High School pupil Cody Murray produced a superb performance on his debut at the recent Irish Summer National Age Group Championships in Limerick, returning home with an impressive haul of seven medals.
The 12-year-old, who represents Ards Amateur Swimming Club, claimed five silver medals and two bronze across four days of competition after qualifying for the prestigious event for the first time.
Cody began his swimming journey with Lecale ASC in Downpatrick before joining Ards ASC in June 2024 to further his development. His qualification for the national championships followed six months of hard work and dedication in the pool.
His demanding training programme includes around 11 hours of swimming each week, including two early morning 5.30am sessions twice a week.
One of 15 Ards ASC swimmers to qualify for the championships, Cody earned qualifying times in almost every event available to his age group, electing to compete in seven individual races as well as two relay events during the four-day meet.
The decision paid off in spectacular fashion as Cody challenged for medals throughout the competition, recording personal best times in the majority of his finals to secure an impressive medal haul and cap an exceptional debut at national level.
