A local council has confirmed that work on a £2.9 million Downpatrick public realm scheme, set to commence early next month, is expected to take a year to complete.
In a statement issued on Monday, the local authority said that the Church Street project marked “another major milestone in the ongoing regeneration” of the town.
“Funded by the Department for Communities (DfC) and Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, the scheme will transform one of the town’s key streets into a more attractive, accessible and welcoming space for residents, businesses and visitors,” it added.
“Construction is scheduled to commence in early August 2026, following the completion of network upgrade works currently being undertaken by NIE and BT Openreach.
“The improvements will include high-quality granite paving and natural stone kerbs, upgraded pedestrian crossings with tactile paving, replacement traffic signals, enhanced street lighting, new street furniture, planters and additional tree planting, creating a safer, greener and more vibrant town centre.
“John McQuillan Contracts has been appointed to deliver the scheme, with construction expected to take approximately 12 months.
“Works will take place along Church Street from Pillar Well Lane to the Scotch Street junction, and along De Courcy Place/Lower English Street, from its junction with Church Street to the frontage of Denvir’s Hotel.”
