TRIBUTES have been paid to local businessman and Saul GAC club president Gerald Hynds, who passed away on Saturday.
He will be remembered by many as the owner of Bargainland shop on St Patrick’s Avenue, Downpatrick.
He was also a widely respected Gael who represented Saul GAC as a player and as a committee member.
Saul GAC wrote on their social media account: “Gerry Hynds embodied everything it means to be a true Gael and devoted clubman.
“Gerry’s contribution to our club stretched across a lifetime of service and commitment.
“He wore many jerseys over the years: player, manager, referee, committee member, loyal supporter, and ultimately club president.
“In every role, he carried himself with humility, dedication, and an unwavering love for our club and community.
“To generations within the club, Gerry was a familiar and reassuring presence around St Patrick’s Park.
“Many will fondly remember him making his way around the grounds on his scooter, quietly ensuring the area was kept spotless and welcoming for everyone.
“It was a simple act that perfectly captured the kind of man Gerry was; proud of his club, selfless in service, and always willing to do whatever was needed without seeking recognition.
“Gerry’s legacy is not measured only in matches played or meetings attended, but in the respect, warmth, and friendship he showed to all who crossed his path. He represented the very best of the GAA spirit: community, volunteerism, loyalty, and pride in place.
“His passing leaves an enormous void within our club and parish, but his example will continue to inspire all who follow.”
Down GAA said he was a man “who always gave of his best”.
“Gerry was also a friend to many GAA clubs as he supplied medals and trophies to many through his business in Downpatrick,” the tribute continued.
“He was a man with a great sense of pride in his county and his club.
“Place was very important to Gerry, and the club grounds were utmost in his belief that the GAA club should be a place of welcome for all.
“He was a man who always gave of his best and one who epitomised the volunteer ethos on which our Association is built.”
