A local chess club is the winner of its division. Downpatrick Chess Club recently won Division 2 of the Ulster Chess League for 2026. After 14 league games, Downpatrick emerged as winners with 66 points—just ahead of their pursuers Bangor 2 (63 points) and Lisburn (61 points).
With an impressive record of 10 games won, one drawn and just three losses, Downpatrick were the recipients of the John Strawbridge Cup 2026. The team was made up of captain Paul Reaney, Jonny Boyd, Finn Davey, Owen Dumigan, Martin Lannon, Colin Keenan, Dermot Maguire and Paul Smyth.
Downpatrick Chess Club was restarted in 2023. They meet on Saturdays at 1.30 pm at The Saint Patrick Centre for beginners and on every second Wednesday at Denvir’s Hotel in Downpatrick for more experienced players. It is free and all are welcome.
