RGU ladies manager is positive despite poor start

RGU are building for the future, so they won’t allow their disappointing results this season to leave them downhearted. That’s the underlying message from the management following their run of five defeats, the most recent being a 1-9 to 4-9 loss to Burren.

This season was always going to be a tough one for RGU. Their panel is not as strong as some of their opponents, and they don’t have the county players to compete. But manager Tosh McCrissican adopted an optimistic tone.

“We are heading in the right direction,” he said. “I am more pleased with the performances of the team. They are definitely improving with each and every game. I can’t fault the effort and the attitude from the players. Hopefully they will get the reward with good performances.”

On Thursday past, RGU played Burren ladies. Burren had won one, lost three, and drawn three games, while Downpatrick had lost all four of their matches played. According to Tosh, his team played well.

“The first half was outstanding. We competed in every area of the pitch. We went in at half time level. Burren were able to make a few changes and bring on an experienced county player, and it turned the match in their favour. She just ran through the defence because she is more experienced.”

Yet Tosh put a positive spin on it. “It has been a hard season so far, but we are trying to stay as positive as we can and trying to make sure that the young ones are enjoying their football. It does come down to having good performances and maintaining a good attitude. If you can do that, then it becomes more enjoyable.

“If they can walk off the pitch and say that they have given 100 per cent and enjoyed that, then you are heading in the right direction. But we still need to get that first win to let them settle in and see what they can see in training and how they are developing.”

In the full article Tosh goes on to explain how the team are keeping their spirits up.
