Downpatrick cricketers win early-season derby

Downpatrick Cricket Club’s first XI produced a dominant performance to defeat derby rivals Drumaness Superkings by 126 runs in an entertaining Junior Cup clash at the Village Ground.

Winning the toss on a superb, pacy wicket with a lightning-fast outfield, Downpatrick captain Amitesh Bhattacharya elected to bat first on Saturday, a decision that ultimately proved inspired.

Downpatrick made a brisk start as Amit Rekhi (21) and Kranthi Reddy (16) added 31 in the opening four overs. Drumaness responded strongly, reducing the visitors to 137 for 8, thanks to an outstanding spell from Muhammad Abid, who claimed 5 for 44, including a hat-trick.

With the innings in the balance, skipper Amitesh Bhattacharya stood firm. Batting with patience and authority, Bhattacharya compiled a magnificent 100 from 87 balls, striking 13 fours and three sixes in a superb innings. He was well supported by Gokul Rajan (27), before a remarkable final-wicket stand transformed the contest.

At 169 for 9, Downpatrick were still short of a competitive total, but Samuel Irwin joined his captain and played a brilliant cameo of 35 not out from 32 balls, including three sixes. Together, the pair added a match-defining 80-run partnership, lifting Downpatrick to an imposing 249. Other key contributions came from Gokul Rajan (27 from 16), Amit Rekhi (21), and Kranthi Reddy (16).

The pick of the Drumaness bowlers was Muhammad Abid with 5 for 44, including a hat-trick, alongside Eoin Gelston and Darren Oldroyd with two wickets each, and Garry Walsh with one. The Superkings finished on 123 all out (20.1 overs).

Chasing 250, Drumaness needed a positive start but were immediately put under pressure by a disciplined Downpatrick attack. The home side slumped to 47 for 6, with Richu Raju producing a devastating spell of seam bowling. Pitching the ball up and attacking the stumps, Raju tore through the top and middle order to finish with outstanding figures of 5 for 28.

Despite a determined 33 from Neil Walsh, Drumaness never recovered as wickets continued to fall at regular intervals. Samuel Irwin added three wickets, Humza Khan chipped in with one, and a sharp run-out from Sidharth Kumar completed the innings as Drumaness were dismissed for 123.

All in all, it was a derby day to remember for Downpatrick as a superb century from Amitesh Bhattacharya, crucial lower-order support from Samuel Irwin, and a devastating five-wicket haul from Richu Raju sealed a comprehensive cup victory.

Downpatrick CC would like to thank Drumaness Superkings Cricket Club for their excellent hospitality and for hosting a highly competitive and enjoyable Junior Cup derby. Downpatrick wish the Superkings every success for the remainder of the season.
