Six-year-old Luna wins national martial arts award

A NEW star emerged on the local martial arts circuit on Saturday, as six-year-old Luna Harris from Downpatrick delivered a standout performance at the Savage Martial Arts Irish National Championships in Dublin.

Competing in the competitive 5–7-year-old division, Luna, who also enjoys Irish dancing and plays Gaelic football for RGU Downpatrick, tested her mettle across four demanding disciplines; board breaking, flying side kick, sparring, and grappling.

While her versatility was on full display throughout the day, it was in the grappling category where Luna truly made her mark. In a combined field featuring both boys and girls, she battled her way to a silver medal, officially ranking second in Ireland in her age group.

Having joined the Savage Martial Arts club in Downpatrick two-and-a-half years ago, Luna has already worked her way up to green belt level as she continues to learn and refine her skills.

The St Colmcille’s P2 pupil’s achievement in Dublin is particularly remarkable as Saturday’s event marked Luna’s first-ever championship appearance, signalling a bright future ahead for this young athlete.
