LOCAL residents are concerned about the speed some vehicles are travelling at along Dalraida Road, in the Flying Horse area of Downpatrick.
South Down MLA Colin McGrath said families living in the area have contacted him to highlight the dangers caused by vehicles travelling too fast along the road.
“Dalraida Road is a residential area where many families live, and people should be able to feel safe outside their own homes,” stated the SDLP Assembly member.
“Unfortunately, residents have told me that speeding traffic has become a real source of fear and frustration. When cars are travelling too fast through an area where children may be playing, walking, or cycling, the consequences can be devastating.
“Nobody should have to wait for a serious accident before action is taken. I have been listening to local people and I share their concerns.”
The MLA said measures need to be considered that will slow traffic on the local road and improve safety for everyone who uses it.
Mr McGrath said that he will be raising the issue with the Department for Infrastructure and the district’s Policing and Community Safety Partnership. He added that he wants to see what can be done in terms of enforcement when drivers are speeding and also what traffic calming measures can be introduced.
Families in the Flying Horse area deserve peace of mind, he added.
“Their streets should be places where children can grow up safely, not roads where parents are constantly worried about speeding vehicles.”
