FOOTAGE of Crossgar in the early 1950s is to be shown in the village’s War Memorial Hall for the April meeting of Crossgar Historical Society.
The footage was recorded by Tom Williams, a Welsh soldier stationed in Crossgar during WW2, who soon married the local postmistress, Katie Duff. While in Crossgar, he took a great interest in many festivities happening in the village and recorded these on his cine camera (16mm).
Society president Callum Bowsie said: “Thanks to this keen filmmaker, we have fantastic footage of the village in mostly full colour, and this has been carefully preserved by his daughter Ann Patterson. This footage includes the Queen’s Coronation celebrations, parades, dances, sports days, last days of the railway, and the opening of the War Memorial Hall and more.
“The screening is open to the public, and no doubt guests will be able to spot many familiar places in and around Crossgar, as well as many past residents. I encourage people not to miss this rare opportunity to see some of the earliest footage available of Crossgar.”
The event is being held in Crossgar War Memorial Community Hall on Wednesday the 29th of April at 7.30pm. The film will be shown on the big screen in the Main Hall, lasting about 30 minutes. Anyone can come along (pay £3 at the door). Light refreshments will also be served.
