Ulster U-20 group B round 2
Tyrone 4-23 Down 1-14
DOWN were mercilessly defeated in round two of the Ulster U-20 Championship at O’Neill Park in Dungannon.
The result adds to the team’s disappointment as they lost their opening game to Armagh the previous week.
Tyrone were the better team throughout. They led by 1-6 to 0-1 after 15 minutes. Down’s only score came from a free from Eoghan Travers.
Travers, Luke Quinn and Liam Blaney added to their tally in the remainder of the half, but Tyrone blitzed them with two goals and seven points to lead by 3-13 to 0-5 at the break.
The opening stages of the second half saw Eoghan Travers find the target again, but in response Tyrone reeled off five points.
In the remainder of the game, Tadgh O’Hanlon scored a two pointer, Travers got two two-pointers, and Ruairi Madine scored a goal. But they were never close to catching the Red Hand County.
Down’s third and final game of the U-20 group stages is against Cavan next Wednesday at Páirc Esler (7.30pm).
Down have an outside chance of reaching the knockout stages of the competition. They are currently in fourth place on zero points.
If they can finish in third place they would go through to the knockout stages, where they would play the team that finished third in Group A, which is currently Monaghan.
Even if they don’t beat Cavan, the team that finishes fourth in Group B goes on to play in the Tier 2 Competition, which is between fourth and fifth in Group A and fourth place in Group B.
Down scorers: Eoghan Travers 0-10 (0-6 frees, two two-pointers), Ruairi Madine 1-0, Tadgh O’Hanlon 0-2 (two-pointer), Liam Blaney and Luke Quinn 0-1 each.
