Dunleath Park gains major accessibility boost

DOWNPATRICK’S Dunleath Park has been given “a major accessibility boost”, local SDLP representatives have said.

Last Wednesday (25 February), the council’s Planning Committee approved a proposal for a new disability access linking St Patrick’s Avenue to the park’s walking trail, a decision welcomed by South Down MLA Colin McGrath and Downpatrick councillor Conor Galbraith.

Mr McGrath stressed that the decision “represents another meaningful step in the long-term vision for Dunleath Park”.

“Five years ago, the SDLP began work to develop Dunleath Park as a vibrant sports and recreation hub for the community,” he stated.

“Since then, we have continued to push forward improvements that make the space more welcoming, more active and more inclusive for everyone who uses it.

“This new disability access trail is particularly important because accessibility must sit at the heart of community development.

“Parks and shared spaces should never feel out of reach for anyone, and this investment helps remove barriers that many families and individuals have faced for too long.”

Cllr Galbraith added that the approval “reflects the value of sustained community engagement and partnership”.

“We have listened closely to residents who highlighted the need for improved access between St Patrick’s Avenue and Dunleath Park,” he said.

“This ramp and accompanying steps will make a real, practical difference, opening up safer routes for wheelchair users, parents with buggies, older residents and anyone who benefits from easier gradients.

“Dunleath Park continues to grow as a space where sport, wellbeing, and community life come together.

“This is an important milestone in that journey and a clear signal that accessibility is not an afterthought – it is essential.”

The local representatives reaffirmed their commitment to “continuing to work with local stakeholders to build on progress at Dunleath Park and ensure the park reaches its full potential as an inclusive community sports hub”.

A council statement confirmed that the access ramp will also feature steps and a pedestrian guardrail and will fully conform with the Disability Discrimination Act.

Council chairperson Philip Campbell stated that “the provision of a new accessible entrance will further open Dunleath Park to people of all abilities”.

“The walking trail has been a great success since it opened and hosts a very popular Parkrun every Saturday morning,” he highlighted.

“The council is investing in inclusive facilities, with the new ramp linking St Patrick’s Avenue and Dunleath another positive step.

“The new ramp is compliant with accessibility legislation and opens the door to more people accessing Dunleath, which is good news.”
