Traynor and Telford grab the limelight

Traynor and Telford grab the limelight

26 September 2012

KILMORE fought tooth and nail to book their spot in the last 16 of the Steel and Sons Cup, but victory came at a heavy price as midfield terminator, Niall McCarthy was red carded in a full-blooded affair.

Two Derriaghy players also saw red, but McCarthy’s loss is a huge blow to the Rec as he now misses Saturday’s crunch Border Cup tie way to Immaculata.

Kilmore dedicated matters from an early stage and Philip Traynor headed over after good approach play from Stephen Douglas in the fourth minute.

Four minutes later Derriaghy’s John Rosbotham had his side’s first shot in anger, but his strike was held cleanly by Michael McKenna.

Kilmore then shot themselves in the foot when Jack Larkin’s attempted headed back pass to McKenna fell short and Aaron Baker swooped to fire home from just outside the box.

This stirred the locals into action and a minute later Traynor was perfectly placed to steer in the equaliser after both Andrew Telford and McCarthy had shots blocked.

With 20 minutes gone a free from Mark Miskelly was met by Peter Telford, but his header was brilliantly saved by Mark Robson. Douglas fired over the resulting corner and Peter Telford volleyed in a stunning goal to give Kilmore a 2-1 lead.

Ten minutes later James Guiney, Derriaghy’s experienced centre half, kicked lout at McCarthy, but the Kilmore man retaliated in full view of the referee and immediately was shown the red card.

It was going to a long 60 minutes for Kilmore without McCarthy, but they ignored their plight and looked to kill the game off.

Traynor should have been awarded a penalty in the 33rd minute when he was tripped in the box by Colin Stronge, but the referee waved play on.

Traynor went close again in the 38th and 40th minutes and Peter Telford gave Derriaghy a fright in the 43rd minute when his shit went inches wide after brother Andrew created the opening.

Kilmore’s enterprise was rewarded a minute into the second half when Andrew Telford was brought down in the box, but McKenna’s soft kick was saved by Robson.

The home side continued to dominate with Traynor and Peter Telford going close, but a third goal just wouldn’t come. Derriaghy became increasingly frustrated by Kilmore’s resilience and they had Stronge sent off in the 75th minute and he was followed by Guiney after another bad tackle on Peter Telford.

Kilmore were now able to see the game out in comfort and extended their unbeaten start to the season in all competitions to eight games.
