TOM Williamson, the 21-year-old triathlete from Saintfield, has added another strong result to his impressive debut season.
The local secured a fifth place finish at the World Para-Triathlon Championships held in Torremolinos, Spain, on Friday.
Competing in the fiercely competitive PTS5 category, Tom faced some of the best para-athletes in the world.
He led the 750m swim, exiting the water in first place ahead of the world’s elite. He continued with a strong bike performance on the technical 20km course, with the final 5km run determining his place in the top five in the world, finishing with an overall time of 1:01.30.
He said, afterwards: “I gave it everything out there. The swim and bike were strong, but I just couldn’t quite match the pace on the run.
“But to finish in the top five in the world – it’s an achievement I’m proud of and I’m walking away from this season stronger than ever.”
Tom’s performance in Torremolinos follows his impressive 3rd place finish at the European Triathlon Championships in Vichy, France, just a few weeks earlier.
The young athlete’s debut season on the World Triathlon Para circuit has seen him consistently finish within the top six in all his races, securing multiple podium finishes.
Looking back on his season, he said: ”It’s been a year full of growth and learning. I’ve raced against the best in the world, and every race has taught me something new.
“Coming 5th at the World Championships is a great way to cap off the season, and it’s only motivated me to keep pushing for more.”
In addition to his race results, Tom has been overwhelmed by the support he’s received this year.
“It’s been incredible to hear from so many people – not just fans of the sport but those who’ve been inspired by my journey.
Their messages and encouragement really helped me push through the toughest moments of the season,” he reflected.
With a season filled with top results across three continents, Tom has cemented his place as Ireland’s rising star in para-triathlon.
Though he narrowly missed out on the Paris Paralympics earlier this year, his consistent form and resilience have left little doubt that bigger successes lie ahead.
Looking forward, Tom remains focused and optimistic. “This season was just the beginning.
“I’ve got a lot more to give, and I’m excited to see where this journey takes me.”
