Mr Raymond Hodges, of Ballyhossett Road, Downpatrick, who died in Downe Hospital on April 12 at the age of 76, was a popular and respected member of the local community.
He was born on September 4, 1943, at Rathmullan, near Tyrella. He started work as a farm labourer before joining Downpatrick Timber Slate and Coal Co Ltd.
After this he delivered home heating oil for many years before ending up on tankers delivering fuel to garages and supermarkets.
He loved watching cricket, having played for Minerstown in his younger days, and enjoyed a night at the dogs.
A country man at heart, he could be found at many an agricultural show.
For many years Mr Hodges was caretaker of Ballee Non-Subscribing Presbyterian Church, taking great pride in looking after the graveyard. He later became an elder and a trustee.
He joined the Ulster Special Constabulary in 1965 and served until its disbandment in 1970 when he transferred to the part-time RUC Reserve with which he remained until 2001.
He was also a member of Rathmullan Accordion Band and Rathmullan LOL 360.
Mr Hodges is survived by Doreen, his wife of 55 years, son Brian and his wife Fidelma, son Andrew and partner Eimear, daughter Wendy and husband Roger, grandchildren David, Stuart, Naomi, Madison, Hannah and Isabelle, and great-grandchildren Libby and Alex.
Due to the coronavirus situation it was only possible to have a small graveside service, which was conducted by the Rev Dr David Steers.
