SOUTH Down MLA Jim Wells has offered his support to a Downpatrick farmer in line for a major farming award.
Jack Kelly, who farms at Ballyalton, is one of four finalists in this year’s RSPB/Daily Telegraph Nature of Farming awards’.
“Farmland covers 75% of the United Kingdom and much of our wildlife is dependent on this habitat,” said Mr. Wells.
“Jack’s 89 acre farm features areas of wild bird cover and retained winter stubble. It supports farmland birds which depend on seeds during the winter months.
“The A shaped hedges on the farm also provide food, shelter and links between essential habitats for a range of birds, mammals and insects’.
“I am delighted to lend my support to Jack’s commitment to the protection of wildlife on his farm. I wish him all the best in the Nature of Farming awards and I would urge everyone in Down District and further afield to vote for Jack by going to www.rspb.org.uk/farmvote.
