THE world famous Red Arrows were spotted in the skies over Spa Golf Club last week, but on the ground it was Lorna Stevenson who was flying high on Kathleen Russell’s Lady President’s Day.
The brief appearance of the aeronautical display team was a unique if unintentional prelude to the set piece event at the Ballynahinch club as the Spa ladies took to the fairways of the 18-hole parkland course.
Lorna, who is this year’s lady vice-president at Spa, has been returning some impressive scores in the past few months and Friday’s event was to prove no exception.
With 36 points on her card, she was a point clear of her nearest rivals, Teresa Hazzard and Liz Geddess — both on 35 points — with Teresa just edging ahead for second prize on a back nine countback.
To introduce an element of fun, the Lady President had restricted competitors to just four clubs and their putters, which caused quite a bit of discussion among the Spa lady members.
Mrs. Russell thanked everyone who had taken part in the competition and all those who had contributed so much in making what was a wonderful and thoroughly enjoyable day.
Thanking the lady president for her beautiful prizes, lady captain Lynne Robinson joked that she had obviously chosen the wrong four clubs as she had been unable to post a winning score.
