Killyleagh children are Little Stars

ALLIANCE representatives met recently with staff and children at the Little Stars pre-school playgroup in Killyleagh.

Strangford MLA Nick Mathison was joined by Rowallane councillors Tierna Howie and David Lee-Surginor.

During the visit, the elected representative discussed the significant challenges facing the early years sector, particularly in supporting parents of children with special educational needs.

Mr Mathison said the “warm, supportive, and caring environment” at Little Stars is immediately evident” when you arrive.

“The staff do an outstanding job of nurturing the children and providing invaluable support to parents and families within the local community. I commend their dedication to both the children and the wider Killyleagh community.

“There are clear and pressing issues facing Little Stars and other early years providers in the region. Access to funded early years education is not always available to those in rural areas, and organisations like Little Stars provide a vital service despite limited support.”

The MLA said he will be raising these concerns with Education Minister Paul Givan, particularly the lack of adequate support for children with special educational needs.

Cllr Howie described Little Stars as a “lifeline” for so many families in Killyleagh and the surrounding area.

“It’s clear that the staff go above and beyond to create a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for children,” she said.

“However, they need more support to ensure they can continue to provide this essential service. It’s vital that rural communities like ours aren’t left behind.”

Cllr Lee-Surginor said while the challenges facing early years settings like Little Stars are not unique, they are amplified in rural areas where resources are stretched thin.

He added: “The lack of support, especially for children with additional needs, must be addressed. We will continue to advocate for the resources and attention these children and their families deserve.”
