Ironman David gets through pain barrier to support charity

A FORMER Crossgar man has taken part in one of the world’s toughest events — Ironman Lanzarote.

David O’Prey completed the toughest of all the Ironman events in 13 hours and 45 minutes raising over £1,300 for the premature baby charity, TinyLife.

Set in the picturesque back of the island of Lanzarote in the Canaries the event pushed participants to the limit as they powered through a swim, cycle and then a full marathon.

“The triathlon began with a 2.5 mile swim in the sea on the east coast of the island of Lanzarote, Puerto del Carmen, then we cycled 112 miles covering a good proportion of the island including the climbs of Mirador de Haria and Mirador del Rio,” said David.

“At some points we were climbing 2,500 metres. Then we finished the event with a 26.2 mile run along the sea front towards Playa Honda and back’.

The event began at 7am and David crossed the finish line some 13 hours and 45 mins later. Those interested in viewing a clip of the race should visit You Tube -

Regional Fundraising Manager for TinyLife, Valerie Cromie paid tribute to David.

“This is a magnificent personal challenge, one that has taken a huge amount of preparation. Sincere thanks to David’s family and friends who generously supported his efforts by helping him raise a staggering £1,350 for TinyLife, the premature baby charity for Northern Ireland,” she added.
