Historic outing for Dundrum

Historic outing for Dundrum

11 May 2022

DUNDRUM Cricket Club women’s team played their first ever game away to Muckamore on Sunday.

Unfortunately, it was not to be their day as they fell to a 50 run defeat. However, as many of the team have never played cricket before it is a magnificent achievement for the club and for sport in the local area.

Dundrum began thinking of starting a women team at the end of last year and eight months on they are playing their first ever game.

Dundrum fielded first, opening the bowling with Jocelyn Wright and Rachel Hodge. They started well making scoring difficult for the Muckamore batters.

Jenny Barker, Niamh Lowry and Jen Shilliday came into the attack and continued to build pressure for the Muckamore players.

However, as the innings progressed the inexperience began to show from the Dundrum players as they began to let Muckamore back into the game.

The Muckamore batters attacked the Dundrum bowlers in the closing overs to finish on 150 from their 20 overs. Dundrum knew they could have bowled and fielded better but in their first ever game in was a fantastic effort.

The pick of the Dundrum bowlers was Jocelyn Wright, who picked up three wickets. Dundrum opened the batting with Jocelyn Wright and Jenny Barker. They both started well giving nothing to the Muckamore bowlers.

Jenny in particular began to attack the opposing bowlers hitting several fantastic boundaries before being retired on 30.

Sarah Herron was unfortunately out for 0 after getting a fantastic ball. Niamh Lowry, Jen Shilliday and Debbie Kendall came in to bat and all did fantastically well in their first ever game to make it difficult for Muckamore.

However, Muckamore’s experience showed as they bowled good lines and fielded very well to dry up the runs for Dundrum. Dundrum eventually finished on 96 for five from their 20 overs.

With many of the Dundrum team having never played before this season it was a fantastic effort by all the team. They will be looking to push on this season gaining more experience with each game and looking to compete in every game they play.

The team is still looking for new players so if anyone is interested you can contact them through their social media pages.
