Downpatrick end fantastic season

19 September 2012

DOWNPATRICK Bowling Club have just completed yet another highly successful season.

The ladies, who play in the Northern Ireland Women’s Private Greens League, bagged most of the silverware and after finishing third in the league table, they went on to win the Hazel Getty Cup.

They beat a fancied Cliftonville side in the final played at Pickie Bowling Club in Bangor with Claire Tumelty (skip), Babs Bassett, Margaret Magee, Elfriede Coburn, Sharyn Jess (skip), Tina Bell, Teasie Connor and Frances Deegan all playing well.

A delighted Elfriede Coburn received the cup from the NIWPGL president, Mrs. June Wilson.

Honours also came to the club in the Private Greens competitions. Babs Bassett won the Junior Singles for the second time after she beat team-mate Sharyn Jess in the final, also held at Pickie Bowling Club.

Sharyn and Tina Bell were then narrowly beaten in the Junior Pairs by two shots when a duo from Ballywalter pipped them at the post.

Not to be outdone, the club’s men’s veterans retained their league title, the club’s junior team, who play on Saturday finished third and the Wednesday team finished in mid-table.

Anyone who would like to have a go at playing bowls is welcome to call at the club at the start of next April or get in touch with club secretary Jimmy Mills, Downpatrick Bowling Club, Old Belfast Road, Downpatrick.
