Crossgar business burglaries concern

Crossgar business burglaries concern

15 February 2012 - by DAVID TELFORD

BUSINESS owners in Crossgar are becoming increasingly concerned about a spate of burglaries in the village.

Last week, a convenience store in Killyleagh Street was targeted, an incident which came three weeks after there were three burglaries in the village within the space of 24 hours.

Councillor Terry Andrews described the thefts as “alarming” and said business owners in Crossgar are concerned.

During the early hours of last Tuesday morning, the Costcutter store in Killyleagh Street was targeted by thieves. Two men, who concealed their identity, forced their way into the shop using a crowbar.

Once inside, they unsuccessfully attempted to prise open a till before stealing a quantity of cigarettes and other tobacco products before making off.

Councillor Anders said there have now been four burglaries in Crossgar within a month and questioned if the same gang was involved in them all.

“This is a particularly worrying time. Things are tough for many people in the current economic climate but those who target business premises looking for goods or cash are wrong,” declared Councillor Andrews.

“I know many traders in Crossgar are concerned at the current situation and I plan to raise their concerns with local police to see if they can increase patrols in the village.”

Councillor Andrews said business owners are left with the expense of having to repair damaged premises after they have been targeted and potential increases in their insurance premiums.

He wants anyone with information about last week’s burglary or the earlier incidents at a Chinese takeaway and butcher’s shop to contact police to assist detectives with their enquiries.

Councillor Andrews added: “Businesses in Crossgar provide a vital community service and are at the heart of the village’s economy. They also employ local people and should not be targeted by burglars.”
