LIGHT winds and surprisingly dry weather brought the spring series at Killyleagh Yacht Club to a close on Thursday night.
With eight races completed, the overall results showed a clear winner in each of the cruiser classes and the points gained in this series will prove useful for the cruisers competing for the Sam Greene Trophy, for the best PY yacht in the club.
In PY1, Big Wig, under Graham Chambers, romped home to win the overall event with four firsts and four seconds, with Raymond Beattie’s Tiger Lily in second place and Crackajack, owned by Liam McMahon in third.
A disappointing turnout in PY2 meant McNamara and Jones in Moonshadow were unchallenged in many of the races, allowing them to sweep the board with eight firsts.
In second place overall was Extreme, sailed by Mark Bridges and in third, Jim Gibb’s Mississippi.
The autumn series will hopefully see more competitive racing in this class as more yachts take to the water in the hope of some summer weather at last.
The Squib class proved to the most competitive and although only six races were sailed, the winning positions were passed back and forward between the yachts.
Blue, sailed by Harold Curran and David Hanna, claimed the series with Dermot Quinn’s Sparkler in second place and Firecracker, sailed by Don and Steven Bridges in third.
In the Dinghy Handicap class it was a family battle and just one point decided the victor, with Kyle Bolton in Lager Lout II pipping Matthew Bolton in Bottoms Up to claim the overall prize.
After two months of weekly racing the competitors can take a break before the Autumn Series commences on July 26.
