A NUMBER of local groups which champion inclusion and diversity have been praised by Newry, Mourne and Down Council chairman Pete Byrne.
He recently visited the groups which included the Downpatrick-based Dramability and Newcastle’s Shimna Stars Special Olympics Group.
Dramability is a mixed ability drama group which provides classes, theatre trips, summer schemes and residentials for children and works closely with local schools and playgroups to provide workshops and presentations on the themes of difference and inclusion.
Shimna Stars offers support, sport, recreation, social interaction and learning to those with an intellectual disability.
The council chairman’s visit not only shone a spotlight on the incredible work the respective groups do, but also to present them with a donation to help support their essential services.
The local groups play a pivotal role in fostering connections and enhancing wellbeing through community driven projects that create opport-
unities for interaction, participation and wellbeing.
Their collective efforts bring residents together ensuring that everyone feels supported and valued.
Cllr Byrne said he was delighted to support what he described as these “incredible groups” as they continue to deliver invaluable services and support to so many people.
“Their tireless work makes a difference to the lives of residents across the length and breadth of Newry, Mourne and Down,” he said.
The chairman added: “These champions of inclusion and diversity enrich lives and, in many cases, quite literally provide a lifeline to those in need.”
