THERE were celebrations at Dunsford Old School Baby and Toddler Group this
week with news that funding has been secured to develop the unit’s early years programme.
The baby and toddler group, which was established in March 2011 to offer a social activity for parents and children in the rural community, has been offered a grant of several thousand pounds by the East Down Rural Partnership Area for the purchase of educational toys, games and musical equipment
The group’s volunteers have already invested £4,000 in the equipment, which will later be reimbursed.
To celebrate the news, South Down MP Margaret Ritchie paid a visit to Dunsford Old School where mums meet with their children, aged between two weeks and four years-old, every Monday morning.
Group leader and committee Chairwoman, Mrs. Sharon Morrison, said she was delighted with news of the grant, which she said would benefit the many local families who avail of the service.
In addition to games and equipment, Mrs. Morrison said volunteers had also selected child-centred furniture and safety equipment.
She said they were continually developing programmes to encourage the children’s development.
“Learning opportunities are provided through play-based activities involving problem solving, social routines, singing, talking and art
work and parents and carers are encouraged to help in these activities to ensure added value.
“Learning is fun and delivered in a safe and secure environment within an extended family atmosphere. A healthy breakfast is also provided for all.”
Margaret Ritchie MP has offered her congratulations to Dunsford Old School’s baby and toddler group on their success in securing their new children’s’ resources, and for the useful provision they are providing for the community.
Ms. Ritchie said she was delighted the group is going from strength to strength and commended the work of all those involved in managing the facility.
Dunsford Old School Baby and Toddler Group meets every Monday morning from 9.30am-11.30am in Dunsford Old School, Chapeltown.
It currently caters for 20 children and their careers and new members are welcome to attend.
