Anne aims to inspire others to take big step for charity

A DOWNPATRICK woman is urging people with a head for heights, and those who don’t, to help raise money for Marie Curie Cancer Care.

Anne Miller hopes local people will support the charity’s Scrabo tower abseil which is being held next month. It’s an event she took part in last year in memory of her husband who died of cancer in 2001.

Despite being terrified of heights, Anne was determined to do something really challenging in order to raise the vital funds needed for Marie Curie nurses to continue caring for terminally ill patients locally.

“This was a huge challenge for me, given my fear of heights. However, I am so glad I did it,” explained Anne.

“I raised £420 which I am delighted with as the money will have provided over 21 hours of Marie Curie nursing care in the local community for someone with a terminal illness and vital emotional support for their family.”

Anne said having lost her husband and several friends to cancer, she understands how valuable the Marie Curie service is.

“Everyone was really willing to give once they knew which charity I was fundraising for,” she continued.

“I would encourage everyone to consider taking part in the March 23 event. Abseiling down Scrabo tower was thrilling and something I never imagined I would do. Knowing the difference I was making gave me that extra push that I needed to get over the top.”

The annual abseil is now in its sixth year and standing 125ft high, participants can enjoy amazing views of the surrounding area from the top of Scrabo while raising much-needed funds to help Marie Curie nurses continue to care for terminally ill patients locally.

The fee is £10 to register with participants, who must be over 14, asked to raise a minimum of £55 in sponsorship. For further information visit www.mariecurie.org.uk/adrenaline or telephone 0845 052 4184.
