All set for Jimmy’s 10

11 December 2024

THE Jimmy’s 10k will take to the streets of Downpatrick on Sunday, March 16, 2025, for the popular event’s 25th anniversary.

The race was established in 1999 by Joe Quinn in memory of Jimmy Murray, who was a stalwart of East Down Athletics Club and an inspirational coach to junior runners.

The first race was held at Bishopscourt and was attended by only 30 runners.

But it soon gained legs, moved into Downpatrick and was officially coined ‘Jimmy’s 10k’.

There was an enforced hiatus due to the pandemic in 2020, but the event has been held in every other year, making 2025 the 25th anniversary — a milestone worthy of celebration.

Finnebrogue, leading UK food producer and Downpatrick’s largest private employer, is back for a third year and will support the organisers, East Down AC, with race promotion and enhancing the race day experience.

As part of a generous three-year deal, Finnebrogue will provide financial backing to enable the club to host a top-notch event.

They will be supplying goodie bags to the first 100 to sign up and will be hosting a post-race bbq for runners and spectators.

The partnership also plan to give back to the community by donating a percentage of the race fees to the River Quoile Trust.

Finnebrogue’s communications manager, Anthea Kelly, outlined the importance of the event.

“Finnebrogue is delighted to once again partner with East Down Athletics for the 25th anniversary of Jimmy’s 10K in 2025,” she said.

“This milestone event not only celebrates the running community, but also invigorates the town centre, bringing much-needed energy and economic benefits to local businesses.

“The sight of runners racing down Market Street towards the Quoile is truly spectacular and we encourage everyone – from seasoned athletes to first-timers – to join in the fun.”

Stephen Heasley, chair of East Down AC, was also quick to highlight what the race has to offer.

“We are proud to be custodians of this long running event, catering for runners of all abilities and we welcome those chasing personal bests as well as runners out to complete their first ever 10K,” he said.

“We know Robbie Hagan and Catherine O’Connor are coming back to defend their titles. Robbie must also have the time bonus in his sights, judging by his recent form.

“If the winning male breaks 31 minutes, there is a £200 bonus up for grabs. The same sum is there for the first female if they go sub 35 minutes and this is on top of the £200 prize money.”

He added: “With the support of Finnebrogue, we are thrilled we can offer one of the best prize pots around, but just as importantly, offer a fantastic day out for all.”

Entries opened yesterday and early bird pricing runs until the end of January.

A long sleeve T-shirt with a bespoke anniversary design will be included in the entry fee for the first 600 runners.
