VISITORS to Murlough beach have been warned to exercise caution when walking in the area.
The National Trust says some of the wonderful sand dunes at the beach have experienced “significant erosion” as a result of the recent stormy weather.
In a social media post, the organisation says while nature continues to shape the landscape, it does mean that sections of the dunes along the shoreline can be increasingly unstable and liable to sand slides and collapse.
“Sand is extremely heavy and in the event of a dune collapsing or sliding, there is an increased danger of becoming buried,” the National Trust warns.
If you’re visiting us in the coming days, please take extra care and stick to designated paths to help protect the dunes, avoid climbing up the foredunes or walking along the top of dune edges.”
In addition, the public is advised when walking along the beach, to avoid walking directly along the base of the dunes.
“Be mindful of your surroundings, as the terrain may have changed,” the social media post continues.
“As a result of recent sand movement, the beachfront section of the North Point Nature Trail is no longer accessible and should not be attempted. We appreciate your support in preserving this special place for wildlife and future generations.”
