‘Determined and caring’ May enjoys 101st birthday

THERE were celebrations at Spa Nursing Home last Friday when May McKinley celebrated her 101st birthday.

She was joined by her daughter Kathleen, granddaughter Jacqueline and grandsons Frankie and Darren for the special occasion.

Born on the Shankill Road, Belfast, on July 12, 1923, May said she doesn’t necessarily have a secret to a long and happy life, but is grateful for every day.

She grew up in Sailortown and is the second oldest of 12 children – only two of her sisters are still living.

Mary married Jimmy McKinley on April 26, 1943, in St Joseph’s Chapel, Sailortown, aged 20 and the couple were married for 67 years.

Once married, May lived most of her life in the Short Strand, raising five children. Sadly, May’s eldest daughter died at 14 months, with her three sons all passing in the last 11 years.

Her youngest daughter is the only remaining child, but she has six grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Although 101 years young, May still loves to socialise, especially with a bacardi while enjoying a few rounds of bingo.

Spa Nursing Home staff member, Sara Mitchell, described May as a “determined, caring and selfless woman”.

Sara added: “May likes to keep busy, 101 is only a number, May could pass for a 70 year old.

Staff who care for May are privileged to look after such a wonderful lady who is always smiling, bright and cheerful and full of life.”
