Tributes paid to club stalwart who died at weekend

25 November 2020

BALLYNAHINCH Youth FC have paid tribute to one of the founding members of the club, Paul Allison, who has died.

A statement from the club said: “It is with heavy hearts that we must share the sad news that one of our founding members, former chairperson and good friend Paul Allison has passed away.

“All officers, coaches, committee members, players, supporters and all associated with the club wish to pass on their deepest sympathies, sincere condolences and support to Paul’s wife Jennifer, children Gregg and Jo and the whole family circle at this time.”

The club said Paul was integral in helping to make Ballynahinch Youth what it is today.

“Paul was a well respected, passionate chairperson and member of our club — going above and beyond to help develop the club to the Ballynahinch Youth we know and love today.

“As one of the founding members Paul played a key role in the foundation of our cross-community club. He helped to develop a safe and fun environment where player development was at the forefront.

“As part of the committee he spearheaded decisions to form our mini soccer development section. He also championed and fought for our female players to compete alongside their male counterparts in the South Belfast Youth League.”

The club also paid tribute to Paul’s charitable efforts, helping to raise funds for Clic Sargent and the Children’s Cancer Trust.

It also recognised his many extra roles, attending countless league, fixture and registration meetings and gave up more time taking teams to tournaments and on trips.

“Paul was also one of the club’s most successful coaches, winning silverware in our very first season. Most notably, he was part of a coaching group, alongside Stephen Douglas and Gerry Kinnear, that led a talented U-12 team through to U-14 on a 54- game unbeaten run in the Premier Division of the SBYL, winning league and cup doubles.

“In more recent years, Paul moved on to coach in the senior club, assisting the men’s first and second teams. Paul’s presence at the club will be sorely missed, but his contribution will never be forgotten.”

There will be a drive through funeral service for Paul at Ballynahinch Baptist Church tomorrow at 1.30pm.

There will be a PA system available so mourners can stay in their cars or stand outside following social distancing guidelines.
