DOWN High School student Matthew Nelson has beaten 500 other young hopefuls to be named winner of a prestigious farm safety competition

Matthew’s winning entry, a story board about the importance of safety on farmland, was unveiled at the Balmoral Show last week.

It will now be made into an animated video, which will be used as a teaching resource in schools across Northern Ireland.

Th final movie will illustrate the potential dangers children can encounter when playing on a farm.

Speaking about the competition, Bryan Monson, chief executive of the Health and Safety Executive, praised schools for taking part.

“It’s commendable that so many schools have engaged in this competition and are actively promoting the issue of farm safety in their classrooms,” he said.

“But there still remains a great deal of work to be done in highlighting this important safety issue.”
