STRANGFORD A...................6
OWENBEG A.........................4
MATCHES between these teams are usually closely fought encounters and this one was no exception.
Pat Mulholland got Owenbeg off to a good start with a straight games win over Colin McKinty.
Hugh Scott made it 2-0 in a tight match, coming from two games behind to snatch victory from Marty Trainor, winning the fifth game 12-10.
Joe McConville pulled one back with his 3-0 win over Jason Gill, but Owenbeg increased their lead once more with triumph in the doubles.
McConville v Mulholland is usually a close affair, but former individual champion McConville won in straight games to reduce the deficit to one.
He went on to square the match when he beat Hugh Scott, who let a two-game lead slip before losing 11-7.
Colin McKinty pulled Strangford ahead with a 3-0 win over an improving Jason Gill before Mulholland levelled against Marty Trainor.
The next two games were crucial for both teams and excellent victories for McKinty over Scott and Trainor over Gill ensured both points for the home side.
Meanwhile, Owenbeg A were too strong for an improving Strangford B team, who can be pleased with their individual performances.
Peter Madine was unlucky not to have taken the first two games before losing in four to Hugh Scott.
Nuala Hynds, another player who is now a regular in the side, can be pleased with her points total against double-title holder Pat Mulholland, but lost in straight games.
The affable Michael Deery also scored well in his match with Jason Gill, but the match concluded, as expected, with a comfortable win for Owenbeg.
The Lecale League committee would like to wish all its members a very happy Christmas and New Year.
