Sizzling at St Patrick’s

7 April 2021

AFTER an absence of over three months local golfers returned to the fairways last Thursday.

The resumption after the lockdown brought welcome activity at all local clubs.

At St Patrick’s in Downpatrick the high scoring at the weekend indicated that the shutdown had not affected standards.

Mark Jackson won Friday’s sweep competition on a count back from Eamon Fitzsimons after both players returned 43 points. Daniel Teggart was third with 42 points.

Barry Fitzsimons won the gross category with a 66 and the gold category went to Leo Rooney with 32 points.

David Higgins claimed Saturday’s top spot with 45 points after a close and entertaining battle with Caolain Boyd who finished just a point behind. Gareth Reilly and Ed Baggley Sr placed third and fourth respectively with 42 points.

Declan Curran and Mark McGrath claimed fifth and sixth positions respectively with 41 points and

Michael Gracey found himself in the top seven after finishing on 40 points.

On Sunday Thomas O’Dwyer just got the better of Mark Murphy to finish in first place after both scored 41 points.

For the second day in a row Ed Baggley Sr put in another notable display, this time to finish third on 40 points ahead of Colm Holland and Paul Rice, who also had 40 points, while Barry Toner was sixth with 39 points.

The winner of the gold category for the weekends was the evergreen Gerry McConvey with 36 points.
