Saul celebrates championship success

23 September 2020

BARONESS Margaret Ritchie has congratulated Saul GAA Club on winning the Down Intermediate Football Championship at the weekend

Lady Ritchie said the players “displayed immense skill, courage and tenacity” in their victory over Drumgath at Pairc Esler, Newry, on “Special mention must go to the team, their mentors and coaches including their families, their president, Gerry Hynds and the community in Saul,” she said.

“These people all invested considerable effort in ensuring that these young men were able to secure club championship victory.”

She continued: “At this time, we must not forget those who have passed on who made a major

contribution to the club including the late Phil Stratton, Niall Laverty, Sonia Kinsella and, of course, Peter Craig who was chair for so

many years and ensured the development of the facilities along with club members.

“We must not forget their former president and MP, the late Eddie McGrady, who strenuously fought the objections to the pitch development at a public inquiry.  All current and former members

and team players made their contribution to yesterday’s well deserved result.”

Gareth Sharvin, club PRO and local councillor for the area, said: “The achievement by the Saul senior men, management team, club and whole community is a clear display of what a Gaelic club means to a parish.

“The determination and commitment from all the players has rewarded them by winning the

Intermediate Football Championship and they truly deserved it. The parish was truly blue and gold in the lead up to the final.

“It has been a difficult year for everyone at the club. Those loved ones we miss everyday, were with us every step of the way and the senior men and all of the club have done them so proud. The celebrations have continued since the win and will continue on for the next 12 months.”

Mr Sharvin added: “After 56 years of winning the last championship, the team will be looking to add to that tally, and this squad of players are well able to do so. Well done lads.”
