Rea family will be the focus at local society

22 January 2025

ANNACLOY and in particular the Rea family will be the subject of a talk at a meeting of Crossgar Historical Society next week.

The presentation will be given by Eddie Rea in Crossgar War Memorial Hall on Tuesday at 7.30pm.

Dr Rea, who lives in Killyleagh, is a former chairman of Down District Council.

In 2023 he published a book entitled The Reas of Annacloy. It tells the story of his grandfather who Eddie describes as “a unique character and a most remarkable man”.

Edward Rea of Annacloy (1861-1940) emigrated to Pittsburgh, USA, no fewer than seven times, resulting in half of his family being born in Annacloy and Inch, and the other half born in Pittsburgh.

He was a historian of note, having written two books on the history of the parish of Inch and its families.

Crossgar Historical Society president Callum Bowsie said: “We are looking forward to the Annacloy area of Crossgar being our monthly topic for the first time.

“Having read parts of Eddie’s recent book containing some wonderful photos, I know anyone from the Annacloy or Inch areas or who has connections to this large local family will find his talk most interesting.”

Dr Rea’s book will be available to buy for a discounted price of £10. Admission is £3.
