Public toilets in district are under review

6 September 2017

A MAJOR review of public toilet provision across the Newry, Mourne and Down Council area is due to be completed shortly.

Officers conducting the probe are expected to outline their recommendations at the next meeting of the local authority’s Regulatory and Technical Services Committee.

Mournes councillor, Willie Clarke, said the review is examining the schedule of public toilet maintenance, the district cleansing schedule, staffing arrangements, infrastructure repairs and replacement.

“I have been contacted on numerous occasions about the cleanliness of the public toilets in Newcastle in particular and have also voiced my concerns in relation to the closure of two town centre public toilets during the summer season,” he said.

“The Castle Park and Islands Park facilities were closed on a number of occasions and this new review is an opportunity to have all the concerns recorded and an action plan agreed with regard to improving the quality of public toilet provision in the area.”
