THE district’s first citizen has reflected on the unsung heroes across Newry, Mourne and Down in his Christmas message.
Pete Byrne said it had been his privilege to meet some of the “amazing people” from charitable, voluntary and community organisations who carry out invaluable work helping others.
The chairman said that as Christmas and the New Year approaches, he wanted to reflect on the many inspiring people he has met across the district.
Cllr Byrne said he had the privilege of seeing at first hand the many charitable, community and voluntary organisations working to improve the quality of life for residents.
He said it was a honour to support and shine a light on their work, extending his heartfelt thanks to all those who work with such great organisations.
The chairman said when he took up his post in June, he spoke about the particular importance of supporting marginalised and vulnerable communities and being a champion of inclusion and diversity.
“It has been a privilege to support groups ranging from Dramability in Downpatrick to Amazing Abilities in Slieve Gullion, which provide safe, fun filled and stimulating environments for young people of all abilities,” he continued.
“And for adults, initiatives such as the Green Spaces Community Growing Project in Warrenpoint and the various Men’s Shed projects across our entire district that create welcoming spaces and promote health and wellbeing have also been an inspiration.”
Cllr Byrne’s chosen charity during his year in office is Cuan Mhuire.
He said the organisation’s work to help individuals and families struggling with addiction is “life-changing” and, in some circumstances, lifesaving, with the chairman delighted to meet some of the organisation’s volunteers last week at a special Christmas event.
“My gratitude also goes to all those working over the holiday period and those giving their time to help the elderly, the sick and the vulnerable,” he continued.
“These people are putting the lives of others in front of their own every day, especially during the festival season.”
Focusing on the important role local businesses play within the community, the council chairman described them as the “driver of economic growth within the district”.
He continued: “Small business owners are our neighbours and our friends and I would like to thank them for their commitment to creating sustainable and vibrant town centres, which are at the heart of our communities.
“As a council, we are dedicated to providing long term support to our local businesses by driving forward ambitious, transformational projects across the district over the coming years.”
The chairman said the local authority remains committed to revitalising its city, towns and villages to foster job creation and attract more visitors.
“It is widely recognised that experiences and events also assist in creating a vibrant and growing district and this year we have once again enjoyed a packed calendar of events,” he recalled.
“Our incredible Giant Adventures festivals, the Amgen Irish Open and everything in between have helped to promote our fantastic tourism offering and attract a large number of visitors whose spending has helped to support our businesses and boost the economy.”
Cllr Byrne said at this time of year it was important to continue to support the district’s wide range of shops, restaurants and services.
“I encourage everyone to embrace the spirit of community and shop local, both in-person and online. Celebrate the season in local restaurants, cafés and bars, and champion your local businesses,” he said.
“I am so proud of everything Newry, Mourne and Down has to offer. Let’s make this Christmas special by making it local and as we prepare to welcome 2025, on behalf of Newry, Mourne and Down Council I wish each and every one of you a peaceful Christmas and a Happy New Year.”
The council chairman added: “Together, we can create a thriving environment that benefits us all and ensures that our district remains a great place to live, work and visit.”
