THE start of work on a new pedestrian crossing at Main Street in Dundrum has been welcomed by local Sinn Fein politicians.

South Down MLA Cathy Mason and Slieve Croob councillor Róisín Howell visited the area recently to see contractors at work on the crossing closed to the entrance to Sacred Heart Primary School.

Mrs Mason said the new crossing was a vital step in improving road safety for children, parents and staff.

“This achievement is testament to the hard work and determination of the school community, particularly the children who passionately lobbied for this much-needed safety measure,” she explained.

“Their voices have made a real difference and we commend their efforts in highlighting the importance of safer routes to school.”

Cllr Howell said having spoken to a number of parents, it was clear the benefit the entire community will feel from the new crossing.

“Ensuring the safety of our young people is a top priority and we are delighted to see this project come to fruition.

“We will continue to work alongside the local community to secure further improvements that make our roads safer for everyone,” she added.
