Plans for new modern facility at Tyrella beach

24 February 2021

IMAGES have been released of a proposed new amenity building at the award-winning Tyrella beach.

Newry, Mourne and Down Council — which owns the picturesque beach — is seeking formal planning approval to begin work on the new building which will include toilets, a first aid room and lifeguard facilities.

The existing toilet facilities are set to be bulldozed with the new building replacing them to provide the blue flag winning beach with a modern facility.

Given that the beach is located in an area of special scientific interest, the council says that great care has been taken with the design of the proposed single storey building, with the entrances located away from what at times can be strong, south westerly winds.

In addition, a special sheltered area has been incorporated into the design, covering the doors to the various sections of the building.

The exterior of the building will be constructed with what has been described as a blue engineering brick which architects say responds to landscape colours, in particular, the distant view of the Mourne mountains.

Papers lodged as part of the planning application process confirm that there will be no mains electricity supply to the proposed building.

It is proposed to power the building via Photovoltaic panels on the roof, with all storm water run off from the building discharged into a new soak-away system. Foul sewage will be discharged into a new sewage treatment plant at the site.

Access to the new building will be via the existing tarmac road which connects the beach with the Clanmaghery Road.

A new external concrete platform is to be provided outside the building level with the existing car park, with the proposed new toilets including disabled cubicles. There will also be universal access to the first aid room.

The planning application for the new amenity building is currently being examined by planning officials.
