Novice competition held at camera club meeting

4 December 2019

BALLYNAHINCH Camera Club held its annual novice competition last Thursday evening.

The guest judge was William Allen, from City of Belfast Photographic Society, who had the unenviable task of commenting on all the entries and selecting the winning images. The results are as follows:

Mono prints — 1st Brian Blakely, 2nd Gary Cowan, 3rd Brian Shields; highly commended, Brian Shields; commended, Jim McClean.

Colour prints — 1st Gary Cowan, 2nd John Gallagher, 3rd Brian Shields; highly commended, Brian Shields; commended, Gary Cowan.

Projected digital images — 1st Angela McCullagh, 2nd Pauline Williams, 3rd Carole Hawthorne; highly commended, Carole Hawthorne and John Gallagher; commended, Jim Hunter and Carole Hawthorne.

At the previous week’s meeting, club member and website designer extraordinaire Gary Cowan started the evening with an update of the features in the club’s new website.

He passed the baton to fellow club member John Knipe, who gave an illustrated talk on his recent visit to Japan when he and his wife, Heather, climbed Mount Fuji in aid of The Cure Parkinson’s Trust.

John thanked all those club members who had so generously sponsored him and helped to raise over £4,100 for this very worthwhile cause.

During the last part of the meeting, members carried out a critique on images which were being considered for entry into the fourth round of the NIPA competition, which is on the theme of transport. There was much debate as to what constituted an image depicting the topic. What about a tractor, or a horse jumping over a fence?

At this week’s meeting, the guest speaker will be renowned fine art photographer Laurie Campbell. Laurie’s talk has the intriguing title, ‘The view from five foot two’, and promises to be one of the highlights of the year.
