Newcastle Christmas lights plan

Newcastle Christmas lights plan

23 September 2020

LOCAL politicians met last night to discuss extending Christmas lighting displays in Newcastle.

Members of Newry, Mourne and Down Council’s Neighbourhood Services Committee were also due to discuss what plans will be put in place for this year’s festive celebrations across the district.

Traditionally, there are number ceremonies to officially switch on festive lighting in towns and villages, but no firm timetable is yet in place given the latest coronavirus restrictions outlined this week by the Northern Ireland Executive.

Last night, committee members were due to discuss extending festive lighting at Newcastle harbour by around 20 metres and to decorate an oak tree at South Promenade with Christmas lights for the first time.

In a paper published ahead of the meeting, council officials said the cost of extending festoon lighting at the harbour would be £800 and that the project would have to be signed off by the Commissioner of Irish Lights.  However, decorating the oak tree would cost significantly more.

The estimated cost of decorating the huge tree which is a well known landmark at this part of the resort is estimated at £6,150, with council officers proposing that this particular project should not proceed.

The council report says there is no available power source close to the tree, with the closet available connection located a local authority toilet block some 50 metres away.

Politicians were told last night that the council has a budget if £135,000 for the testing, repair, erection and removal of festive illuminations.

Council officials say that they know where 40 percent of the budget will be spent due to fixed costs, but say there are many others which will more than likely use up the remaining 60% of the budget.
