Mournes rescue team helps stricken walkers

28 July 2021

MEMBERS of the Mourne Mountain Rescue Team responded to two separate calls for help last Saturday evening.

The first alarm was raised just after 7.20pm when a member of a group attempting a challenge walk became unwell on the summit of Slieve Beg.

The team responded and after providing initial help, the volunteers requested air support to evacuate the casualty, with the Irish Coastguard helicopter R116 from Dublin responding to airlift the casualty to safety.

While this incident was ongoing, a second call came in for help just after 9.30pm to assist a young person who became unwell on Slieve Donard.

Team members made their way to the location and were able to provide support and assistance to get the stricken individual to a team vehicle and transport him to safety.

The mountain rescue team has expressed its thanks to the Irish Coastguard and local Newcastle Coastguard teams for their assistance on Saturday.

The 11 team members responded to the weekend incidents were stood down at midnight.
