Ladies grab first win in Division 3 after overcoming Limerick

22 March 2017

DOWN’S senior ladies produced an impressive display to beat Limerick at Pairc Esler on Saturday night and claim their first win in Division 3.
Down enjoyed much of the early possession, but they failed to turn their superiority into scores.
The Limerick girls were much more clinical with their opportunities and dictated the scoreboard in the final 15 minutes of the first half, going in at the break with a 1-4 to 0-2 lead.
Down restarted the second half with purpose and quickly got themselves on the scoreboard. Resilient in defence, Down got on top in midfield and launched attack after attack with the Limerick defence finding the pressure hard to deal with.
With the crowd now building for the men’s game, supporters saw a spectacle of attacking football from both sides for the final 20 minutes.
The game was full of free flowing, end to end attacking football. Limerick may well have kicked on to win the game, but their interest in getting goals instead of taking their points may have been costly.
The home side kept the scoreboard in action and got a goal of their own before Limerick rattled the net leaving a nervy last five minutes.
Down didn’t panic and went three points clear and with the crowd fully behind them, they held into the lead before sealing a deserved victory.
Big thanks to Whitegates Business Developments who have kindly agreed to sponsor the Down Senior Ladies for two years. They have forfeited having their own name to allow the KBRT logo on the front of the new jerseys.
